Online Community Highlights

Marketing & Online Communities
There is currently a lot of activity at the intersection of marketing and online communities. On one hand, you have marketing dollars shifting from traditional media into online communities and social media. On the other, you have online communities, and their explosive growth outpacing any other consumer activity online. At the Marketing & Online Communities conference, on November 8th, we had a full day of discussion around the intersection of these two important trends. The takeaway? There is lot's of experience out there, but as yet, very few best practices.

Online Community ROI - 2007 Report
We publicly released the Online Community ROI report today. The research project was conducted as part of the Online Community Research Network agenda, and was initially released to OCRN members in May. The study had many interesting findings, including:

  • Only 22% of respondents could clearly articulate ROI on community efforts
  • The majority of respondents gave a high priority to establishing an ROI model in the near term
  • 49% were reporting some dimensions of value back to management on a monthly basis
  • "Value" of online community efforts are contextual to an organizations goals and objectives

Online Community Events

Online Community Unconference: East (just announced)
February 21, 2008, NYC
The Online Community Unconference East is a gathering of online community professionals - managers, developers, business people, tool providers, investors - to discuss experience and strategies in the development and growth of online communities. Those involved in online community development (and social software in general) share many common challenges: community management, tools, marketing, business models, legal issues. As we have found with our past events, the best source of information on all of these challenges is other knowledgeable practitioners.
PLEASE NOTE: Registration for this event opened a few hours ago, and we have reserved the first 20 seats at a "Super Early Bird" price of $95!
Click here to sign up for on of the discounted tickets.

Other Events:

The Internet Identity Workshop
December 3-5, in Mountain View
This event is for the whole range of technologist who are developing and applying OpenID and other user-centric identity technologies. The first afternoon will be a comprehensive introduction to the space. The following two days use open space which allows those in the field to bring forward their questions, issues and challenges to have them addressed. The Workshop offers a unique opportunity to interact directly with the experts and innovators in this space and to shape the future of how they evolve. I expect that Open Social will be discussed extensively along with other emerging issues at the intersection of online community, identity and datasharing.

Web Community Forum
December 5-6 in Seattle
Facebook is perhaps one of the most powerful tools for online community building to come along in years. It has a passionate audience, a flexible platform and all the momentum in the world pointing in the direction of success. The Web Community Forum will be exploring this exciting new terrain at their Community Building in the Age of Facebook conference this December. To see the schedule and details, visit: http://webcommunityforum.com/schedule

If you're interested in registering, you can get $25 off the $290 conference price by using discount code 07FORUM1. Be sure to hurry, though. The price goes up to $490 on November 15th.
